College Courses at No Cost

For those among us looking to continue life-long learning, Stanford University may have just the program for you.

Stanford is offering a plethora of free online courses, through edX, the Stanford online program, giving access to a world-class education resources and professional development opportunities.

Through Stanford Online one can broaden their knowledge-base by taking classes in programming, mathematics, public health, quantum mechanics, and many more fields. One can either audit courses for free, or an authenticated certificate of course completion is offered for between $10 and $199, depending on the course.

Coursework can be done at the students’ own pace, from the comfort of their own home – making it the perfect way to keep active.

A full list of the 120 different courses offered can be found here, but a few examples, available starting on June 1st 2023, that may be enticing are:

· Computer Science 101

· Principles of Economics

· Language, Proof and Logic

· Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law

· Essentials of Program Strategy and Evaluation

· American Prophet: The Inner Life and Global Vision of Martin Luther King, Jr.

· Your Body in the World: Adapting to Your Next Big Adventure

· Managing Coronary Artery Disease

· Introduction to Food & Health

It is worth noting, however, that not all of the courses offered are beginner-friendly, and Stanford Online advises people to review the course information ahead of time so someone doesn’t enroll in a course beyond their academic reach.

One course that may be particularly interesting to retirees is Your Body Inside and Out: Using Exercise Physiology to Slow Aging, that examines the connection between physical activity and aging.

In this course, students will learn how bodies change as we age, how different movements can slow physical changes, and what individuals can change in their own health and wellness practices to lengthen a lifespan.

The course Introduction to Food & Health examines a practical, real world approach to a healthy diet for different medical needs.

In this one-week course, informative videos, animated cases, and interactive activities teach students responsible, researched nutritional practices, and what barriers exist to healthy eating and how to overcome them.

Whether looking to broaden your horizons through courses examining classical music or continue your education in subjects like computer science, Stanford Online is a fantastic program to dip your toes in the water without any cost to you. What a great deal indeed!
